Partnerships With Other Agencies

Caltrans has entered into agreements with several agencies to provide funding for specific research or habitat improvements as part of mitigation for the East Span Project.

Caltrans is partnering with:

  • USFWS - To remove and remediate hazardous materials and demolish and dispose of infrastructure at NSGA - Skaggs Island, a future habitat restoration site. Caltrans transferred $8 million to the Navy on June 29, 2009 for help in acquisition, contaminant clean-up, and restoration of diked historic lands at Skaggs Island.

  • East Bay Regional Park District - To create and restore special aquatic sites within the Eastshore State Park.

  • NMFS - To restore salmon habitat tributary to the Central and South Bay. Caltrans transferred $3.5 million to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to administer a grants program that supports fishery projects that improve the ability of steelhead and salmon to migrate upstream to spawn. As of 2008, all grant monies were awarded.
